The Stillwell Family

Charles S. Stillwell, father of W.C. Stillwell, came from Eastern Canada to Appleton, MN in 1879 on the Milwaukee Railroad train, which at that time was the end of the line.  He obtained employment with Barton and Alvord, who operated a grain mill on the Pomme de Terre River, east of Appleton.  In the 1880s, he bought land in Shible Township, which he farmed and later rented.  He spent many years as a grain buyer and manager of grain elevators.

He was married October 21, 1893 to Mary Miller, who arrived in the United States from London, England on August 3rd, 1889, and after a six months stay in Chicago came to Appleton.  They resided in Appleton until their death.  Charles died November 11, 1949 and Mary on July 12, 1951.  Mary was a member of the Gethsemane Episcopal Church, The Monday Club, and Worth Matron in 1923 of Lathrop Chapter 66, Order of Eastern Star Lodge.

Charles and Mary had three sons, viz. Phillip, Walter (W.C.) and Bertram, all of whom graduated from the Appleton High School and later from the University of Minnesota--Phillip and Bertramm the law school and Walter from the medical school.  Phillip married Mildred Pickthorne of Appleton on January 10, 1922.  They have one son, Robert, and three grandchildren.  They reside in Orange County, California.  Bertram married Etha Rosenberger of Tiffin, Ohio.  He was an attorney for forty-three years with the Federal Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C.  They reside in Washington and have one son, James, living at home.

W.C. Stillwell was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1918.  He graduated from medical school in 1922.  He then joined the Mankato Clinic in March of 1927 and practiced medicine in Mankato for over 50 years.  In the summer of 1935, Dr. and Mrs. Stillwell attended courses at the University of Vienna.  Dr. Stillwell died on January 4, 1977.  His wife, Marie, died September 8, 1981.

Suzanne Stillwell was born and raised in Mankato.  After graduating from high school, she went to Stanford University and graduated with a degree in music.  She lived in the San Francisco area for most of her life, where she taught music and ran an accounting business.  She returned to Mankato towards the latter part of her mother's life to help her out.  Suzanne passed away on July 23, 1993.
